MEDICAL THERAPY: PACEMAKERS - HOW OFTEN SHOULD THE PACEMAKER BE CHECKED ? ARE THERE ANY OTHER PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN?

    Q. How often should the pacemaker be checked ?

    A. Although the modern pacemakers are quite efficient and reliable, it is a good idea if the patient checks his own pulse once or twice a day. If the battery is becoming weak, the pulse will drop by 3-5 beats per minute. The connecting wire may break, so that the pacemaker gets disconnected from the heart. Abnormal symptoms may then appear, e.g., very slow pulse, shortness of breath, dizziness, blackouts or swelling of the feet. If this happens, the patient must immediately report to the doctor who had implanted the pacemaker. He should also report if there is a change of colour, a sign of infection, at the site of the implant, or when the battery starts showing signs of exhaustion.

    Q. Are there any other precautions to be taken?

    A. The patient must be careful not to go near radars, electrical transformers, electric arc-wedding sets, microwave ovens or any defective electrical gadget. If he does so, he may suddenly feel numb and dizzy, because the pacemakers function would have been disturbed. All he has to do is to immediately remove himself from the vicinity of the offending appliance and the pacemaker will start functioning normally.
